What is occupational health and safety (OH&S)?
Basically, OH&S is about having a safe and well workplace. Generally, this involves having work practices and an environment that minimises the chance of injury or illness.
What does the law say about OH&S?
In Australia, OH&S law is state based, so there may be slight differences from one state to another and you should check with your particular state legislation. However, basically the law says that an employer or controller of a workplace has to do as much as possible to prevent a reasonably foreseeable injury or illness from befalling anyone in their workplace, including visitors.
OH&S law is in the process of being ‘harmonised’ so all states will have the same laws. This is expected to occur by the end of 2011.
What is OH&S consultation?
Australian law requires employers to consult with employees on their health and safety at work. OH&S consultation is this process. Usually, representatives or a committee will be the mechanism for consultation. In New South Wales, representatives and committee members are required to undergo a four day OHS Consultation course.
What is occupational therapy?
Despite its name, occupational therapy is about more than just a person’s job. Essentially, it’s about enabling people to participate in everyday life. Participation can be supported or restricted by physical, social, attitudinal and legislative environments. So occupational therapy is about changing aspects of the environment to enhance participation
What does an occupational therapist do?
Occupational therapists assess a person’s needs and enhance their ability to participate by modifying the environment, whether through home modifications, equipment prescription or services.
What is injury management?
When a person is injured at work, injury management is the process undertaken to help them get well and return to the workforce.
